Washington County
Interesting Facts

Washington County, Texas sits at the birthplace of Texas statehood, but there is far more to it than most history buffs realize.

  • Declaration signed in a saloon: The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed at Washington-on-the-Brazos on March 2, 1836, in an unfinished building so drafty and cold that delegates reportedly could see their own breath — a far cry from the stately halls most people imagine for such moments.
  • A brief, forgotten capital: Washington-on-the-Brazos served as a capital of the Republic of Texas in 1836, but the seat of government moved so quickly to other cities that the town never grew into the major city its founders expected, and it eventually shrank to near-ghost-town status.
  • Czech heritage hub: Washington County became one of the most concentrated Czech immigrant settlements in the entire United States during the mid-1800s, and Brenham still hosts cultural events tied to Czech traditions that quietly rival the more famous German heritage towns of the Texas Hill Country.
  • Blue Bell's unlikely home: Brenham, the county seat, is the birthplace of Blue Bell Creameries, founded in 1907. Despite being located in a small rural county, Blue Bell grew to become one of the top-selling ice cream brands in the country without ever distributing nationally — it intentionally limits its footprint to select regions.
  • Antebellum plantation density: Before the Civil War, Washington County had one of the highest concentrations of large cotton plantations in Texas, and the 1860 census showed enslaved people outnumbered free residents in the county — a demographic reality that shaped its Reconstruction politics for decades.

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:
The Brazos River

This weekend, a familiar fall tradition gives Brenham-area families two very different ways to spend a day in Chappell Hill: browse the festival without buying a concert ticket, or make a full evening of Texas country music.

The Scarecrow Music Festival returns October 10–11, 2026, in downtown Chappell Hill, with free vendor areas on Main Street and in the Wine Garden alongside a ticketed Main Stage.

That distinction matters before anyone loads the car: admission to the shopping areas does not include the paid concerts, and parking is a separate expense.

Choose the experience before buying tickets

The official ticket page lists general admission at $50 for either Saturday or Sunday and a two-day general-admission pass at $75, with children six and younger admitted free.

For someone already planning both concert days, the weekend pass is $25 less than two separate $50 tickets.

Families interested mainly in browsing can start with the free vendor areas and budget separately for food, purchases, and parking.

The event website promotes more than 100 vendors, making the marketplace a substantial part of the weekend rather than merely a stop on the way to the stage.

Saturday's announced performers include Roger Creager, Cody Hibbard, The Flinns, Joey McGee, and Cul de Sac.

Sunday's published lineup includes Bri Bagwell, Black Cat Choir, Cathey Bolin and Henry Williams, Cooper Mohrmann, and Taylor Graves.

Read the clocks carefully

The organizer lists free Main Street and Wine Garden browsing from 9 AM to 6 PM on both days, while the local tourism calendar lists the festival from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Those listings are not identical, so check the organizer's latest information before planning an early arrival.

The organizer's FAQ identifies Saturday evening music as 5 PM to 10 PM, and the ticket page says Saturday gates open at 4 PM.

Daytime browsing and evening concerts have different schedules, a useful detail for families deciding whether to stay for music or head home after shopping.

Do not assume a general festival calendar gives the start time for a particular performer.

Sunday begins with a community invitation

An outdoor Sunday service is scheduled on the Main Stage for October 11, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, with gates opening at 8:30 AM.

The church event page gives the stage address as 5315 Main Street and invites people from throughout the community.

It also lists complimentary coffee and kolaches, sponsored by Chappell Hill Bakery and Chappell Hill Coffee Co., before the service.

For that morning arrival, organizers advise approaching from the south via Highway 290 because Main Street will be closed between Providence Street and FM 2447.

Follow posted parking signs rather than trying to drive through the festival corridor.

Pack for the plan you actually made

General-admission concertgoers may bring lawn chairs, and the organizer lists on-site chair rental at $5.

The FAQ lists general parking at $20 and says coolers are not permitted.

Leashed, well-behaved pets are allowed in the free areas, but pets are excluded from the paid Main Stage and VIP areas.

Save the ticket confirmation on your phone before leaving and check the latest entry instructions, particularly if your group is arriving separately.

Comfortable shoes and a little extra time make a better plan than trying to fit shopping, food, and a concert into a rushed visit.

Organizers say festival proceeds benefit the Chappell Hill Historical Society, Fire Department, and Chamber of Commerce.

Pick the day, decide between browsing and concerts, and confirm the current schedule before heading out.

That is enough planning to leave the rest of the weekend for enjoying a Washington County tradition.

Agreed, the lines for drinks were way too long. Fix that next year please.

    • J

sam_tThe drink lines were brutal. We started just sending one person while the rest of us held spots near the stage. Not ideal but it worked.

They really need more shade areas though. It got hot standing out there.

That's really fair feedback, and more shaded areas is something worth passing along to organizers as they plan future editions.
