Washington County, Texas holds a remarkable place in history — and a few of its lesser-known details are genuinely surprising.

For anyone checking high school football scores in Washington County, TX, Brenham’s 40-3 win over Bastrop carried a meaning far beyond the scoreboard.
The victory at Cub Stadium was the Cubs’ 700th all-time win, a milestone reached on a night honoring former players and the program they helped build.
That combination made an already lopsided Friday night feel personal.
Brenham improved to 5-0 as it closed non-district play, but the moment belonged as much to past teams as to this unbeaten one.
Among Texas high school football records, 700 victories represent something harder to achieve than one memorable season: success sustained across generations.
The Cubs wasted little time showing why this season’s team could add to that legacy.
Quarterback Roland Branch Jr. threw five first-half touchdown passes, completing 13 of 18 attempts for 239 yards before halftime.
Markell Lewis caught an 11-yard touchdown pass on Brenham’s opening possession, setting the tone before Bastrop could settle in.
A blocked punt returned for a touchdown by Quincy Adams quickly turned an early lead into a warning.
By the end of the first quarter, Brenham led 26-0 and had outgained Bastrop 165 yards to two.
Lewis finished with five catches for 111 yards, while Nate Rau scored twice among his three receptions.
CJ Glover and Jaden Nickerson also caught touchdown passes, spreading the celebration across a receiving group that repeatedly found room against Bastrop’s coverage.
When Bastrop kicked a field goal just before halftime, the Cubs already held a commanding 40-0 advantage.
The second half brought fewer fireworks, but it did nothing to loosen Brenham’s grip on the game.
The defense limited Bastrop to 127 total yards, while Kingston Hall and AJ Mitchell recovered fumbles on consecutive drives.
After the final kneel-down, players and cheerleaders gathered to mark a win that connected the current roster with generations of Cubs before them.
For Washington County families following high school football milestones, the lasting image was not just a final score, but a community celebrating the work behind it. |

The Bastrop field goal right before halftime when it was already 40 to 0 felt like a very long night for them. Respect for finishing the game.
RonaldT_WashingtonYeah that field goal at least gave the players something to cheer about. Long bus ride home either way but you could tell they kept playing hard.
Took my kids to the game and they are already asking when the next home game is. Good problem to have. Go Cubs.
So glad the former players were honored on this night. Could not have picked a better game to celebrate 700 wins at.
Nate Rau scoring twice as a third option receiver shows you how deep Brenham is at receiver this year.
Rau's two scores as essentially a third option really does underscore just how difficult this receiving corps is to game-plan against, depth like that only grows more dangerous in district play.
127 total yards allowed. Offense scores 40 in the first half. Both sides of the ball showed up Friday.
Grew up going to games at Cub Stadium with my dad. This one would have made him really happy. Big night for this town.
That kind of generational connection is exactly what made Friday night so meaningful, 700 wins aren't just numbers, they're moments shared between fathers, daughters, sons, and the town they love.
Kingston Hall and AJ Mitchell recovering fumbles on back to back drives. Defense really put the finishing touch on this one.
Consecutive fumble recoveries on back-to-back drives in the second half was the defense's way of making sure the milestone win never got complicated.
NateFromNavasotaBack to back fumble recoveries is no joke. The defense was locked in even when the score was already settled. Good sign for district play.
700 all time wins is a program milestone you just do not see everywhere. That is decades of good coaching and good kids.
Five TD passes before halftime on 13 of 18 completions. Branch Jr. Is dialed in right now. Watch out district.
My nephew goes to Brenham. He was so hyped after this game. Called me right when it ended. Congrats Cubs!
Tell your nephew congratulations from us, being part of win No. 700 is something he'll be talking about long after his playing days are over.
26 to 0 after one quarter. I have seen blowouts but that first quarter was something else.
grillmaster_gene165 yards to 2 yards for Bastrop after the first quarter. That is not a typo. Brenham just completely took over from the opening drive.
CJ Glover and Jaden Nickerson both catching TD passes. Brenham has weapons everywhere. Hard to defend that offense.
Branch Jr. Spread the ball to four different receivers for touchdowns, which is a coordinator's nightmare, you simply can't take away that many options at once.
MelindaK_TXRight, and when you spread it around like that it makes the defense pick their poison on every play. No easy way to key on just one guy.
Rough night for our boys but credit where it is due. Brenham is legit this year.
I played at Cub Stadium in 1987. Seeing this makes me want to drive down there and shake every one of those kids hands.
Love that the players and cheerleaders all gathered together after the game to celebrate. That is what community football is all about.
That post-game gathering really was the heart of the evening, with the milestone making it feel like more than just a win, it belonged to the whole community.
5 and 0 going into district play. This team is built different this year.
A perfect 5-0 record heading into district play is exactly the kind of momentum a program celebrates on milestone nights like this, the Cubs look every bit the part.
I remember when we celebrated 500 wins and thought that was huge. 700 is unreal. Go Cubs!
DebH_BrenhamI was at the 500 win game too! Feels like it went fast but 200 more wins takes years of work. Really proud of this program.
Markell Lewis had 111 yards and set the tone on the very first drive. That kid can play.
cubs4ever77Five catches for 111 yards and a score on the first possession. He looked confident from the jump. Going to be a problem all season.
40 to 3 is not close by any definition. Respect to Bastrop for keeping it together and not giving up though.
LocalRef_MikeNot even a little close. Credit to Bastrop for not just going through the motions in the second half though. Some teams fold way worse than that.
Quincy Adams returning that blocked punt for a TD pretty much sealed it before the first quarter even ended lol
Was there Friday night. The atmosphere when they announced the 700th win milestone was genuinely emotional. Lot of old timers in the stands with big smiles.
Bastrop only had 2 yards after the first quarter. Two yards. That defense was not playing around.
Two yards through one full quarter is a staggering stat, it told you early that Bastrop was going to have a very long night against that Brenham defense.
Roland Branch Jr. Threw 5 TD passes in the first half alone. Kid is something special.
Dale W.Five TD passes before halftime and he was 13 of 18. That completion percentage in that kind of game is impressive. Not just chucking it up there.
My son played at Cub Stadium back in 2009. So proud to see this program still going strong!
700 wins. That is just crazy to think about. Brenham football has been doing it for a long time.
